In the last decade lucerne (aka Alfalfa) has got a bad rap here in NZ. However it is heavily utilised overseas in equine diets successfully. So why does it cause issues in NZ?
There is a very small percentage of horses with a true allergy to lucerne. Many factors can play into whether you can feed lucerne successfully or not. We love lucerne and the use of it within a balanced diet, if feasible and possible.
