CLEAN FEED LIST
> Home > Feeding Info > Clean Feeding > CLEAN FEED LIST

HHIO endorsed feeds, safe to feed with HHIO formulas and following the clean feeding principals as much as possible. This list is always evolving as and when new feeds come onto the marketplace. If you think a feed meets our clean feeding principles and is not on this list or we have missed a suitable feed, please feel free to drop us a note here. We encourage you to please support the kiwi feed companies, that are bringing cleaner more balanced (omegas), higher quality, grain free and more horse appropriate feeds to the market. They are highlighted in red.
THE LIST
Chaffs
Lucerne, Meadow, Oaten or Timothy chaff - Oaklane is a good quality brand.
Be mindful of any chaff that has added canola or rapeseed oil - this is a high omega 6 oil which will be increasing your omega 6 balance in the diet. Be sure to include a higher level of omega 3 source to off set this.
Plain Feeds
Peas
Lupins
Copra - Coolstance is a good quality well screened product
Beet - many people like to use beet. We do not promote its use. Make sure to soak and rinse to remove high levels of Iron and potential high sugar levels (depends on product). If you have unresolved/ongoing digestive issues or tender feet, we highly recommend its removal from your horses diet.
Fiber Fresh
Fiber Ezy - any hint of grass issues use plain chaff. This is reserved for hard working horses, horses in poor condition or dentation and elderly.
Fiber Meadow - any hint of grass issues use plain chaff. This is reserved for hard working horses, horses in poor condition or dentation and elderly.
Coprice
Coprice R (plain Rice Bran with no minerals added) use in moderation
Coprice High Joule (Rice Bran + Linseed) - a much higher quality option than Equi-Jewel without the preservatives and wheat, also use in moderation due to Selenium content
Harvest Grains
Endo Hay Pellets - naturally occurring mineral levels listed, none added
Timothy Fibre Pellets - naturally occurring mineral levels listed, none added
Lucerne Pellets - naturally occurring mineral levels listed, none added
Vitalize - limit to around 500g per day as does have minerals added, they are on the lower side if capped at half a kg per day.
Whiterocks
Fibresafe Winter Boost Pellet - a good winter boost option as the name suggests. Starch is at 20% so use appropriately, not for laminitic or metabolic or those prone to grass issues. No added minerals.
Fibresafe Complete pellets - contain extremely low levels of minerals which are acceptable to use with HHIO Everyday formulas without throwing ratios out. Has a great Phosphorus and Calcium ratio balance.
Hekeao Feed Co
Gastro Fuel Mash - contains 11% starch and 21% Protein which may not be agreeable for all horses and especially metabolic or grass affected
Whole Fuel Muesli - contains barley so starch will be higher. Contains extremely low levels of minerals which are acceptable to use with HHIO Everyday formulas without throwing ratios out. Good option for hard working horses.
Calm Healthy Horses
Just plain good - a base feed on its own, no need to add omega 3 as included already
Four Flax
Any cold pressed flax seed oil is fine. Beware of popular 'omega' oils - check the omega 3 vs 6 content - omega 6 often features much higher than omega 3 - look for equal or more omega 3 than omega 6 is preferred.
Mitevite
Extru Lupins - Lupins are extruded with Canola and Rice Bran oil meaning high in Omega 6 - must feed with a concentrated omega 3 source ie: flaxseed oil to balance out the omega 3:6 ratio
Prydes
Easifibre - includes Canola oil which means omega 6 will be higher than omega 3. Must feed an omega 3 source to balance the ratios.
Hygain
Micrlupin - Protein is 32% suited best for really hard working horses and absolutely no metabolic, grass affected or behaviour issues relating to grass.
Benchmark
Micronised Lupins 33% Protein suited best for really hard working horses and absolutely no metabolic, grass affected or behaviour issues relating to grass.
